At first glance, this week appeared to be rather quiet when it came to new News, but not every week can be jam-packed with exceptional reveals. Sometimes it’s reveals a lot smaller in nature, but all that aside, our final highlight is one of great importance! And this is the Miketendo64 News Highlights of the week!
Super Smash Bros. Wii U & 3DS (PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD 2016)
This year, in Los Angeles, California, the 2016 People’s Choice Awards was held and nominated in the Best video game category was of course Super Smash Bros. Faced against Batman: Arkham Knight, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, GTA V and Minecraft, Nintendo’s dual platform Super Smash Bros. managed to hold its own and snatched up the award all for itself and why wouldn’t it? It’s Smash! Who doesn’t love the Smash series? All I can say is it was a deserved win and further testement that when it comes to beat’em up games, no one does it better than Nintendo.

Super Mario Maker (SKY POP HAS PERMISSION TO LAND)
Since its discovery back in December, the Sky Pop airplane from Super Mario Land, went almost three weeks of being denied to us. Three weeks of us sitting at home, staring at the vacant space that was #112 but thanks to Southwest Airlines, the airline who designed the Southwest Air Adventure event course, we were finally given the opportunity and unlock the airplane for ourselves, provided of course you could beat the level they created. You can check out our piece on the new arrival, right here:

Pokkén Tournament (NEW FIGHTER INCOMING)
In December Sceptile was announced as another new fighter for Pokkén Tournament, but there is still another one to come. In this month of January, on the 15th another fighter will be announced, along with support Pokémon, it’s all very exciting stuff as the fighters we already know of, show incredible form in the trailers we’ve seen so far so whoever this new fighter is, one thing is for sure, they will surely have the moves to dominate.

Shovel Knight (COMETH THY AMIIBO)
After a long wait, the latest in a long line of amiibos has released and this time, it is the Knight of Shovelry himself, Shovel Knight, title character of Yacht Club’s Shovel Knight and if that’s not enough, we’re getting an all new update as well! Released now in North America, the new update brings tweaks, bug fixes and more. Now there’s been no mention yet as to whether or not Shovel Knight will be joining all the other amiibo by receiving its own Mystery Mushroom costume in Super Mario Maker, but I’m really hoping it is. Super Mario Maker, among other games in Nintendo’s line-up are to undergo another round of maintanence, so maybe we’ll get lucky and receive a 1.32 update which will enable us to scan the amiibo into the game. If not, oh well, at least we can scan it into Shovel Knight and play co-up, as we level up the “Custom Knight.” And version 2.2 won’t be the only update Shovel Knight will receive as Yacht Club Games hope to finish the game before the end of this year, thus bringing an end to this 2D adventure. Should you wish to check out our feature piece on the Shovel Knight in Super Mario Maker, you can find the link below.

The End Of Nintendo World Store (DAWN OF NINTENDO NY)
First establish in New York City, in 2005, Nintendo World, the gaming company’s official outlet, where all manner of items, merchandise and more can be purchased and home to special events for the release of new games and such, is to close its doors. On January the 19th the store’s doors will indeed close to the general public before renovations will begin. The store aims to reopen a month later, but as well as a new look, it will be sporting a new name, Nintendo NY! How long for it will maintain the new name is anyone’s guess, as it wasn;t that long ago since Nintendo World was known as the Pokémon Centre. Upon its reopening, the general public will be welcomed back in, where they can purchase souvenirs to commemorate the occasion and partake in giveaways and more!

Nintendo Sales (Wii U & 3DS ARE BIG IN JAPAN!)
Wii U finally hits 3 million units sold in its home nation of Japan and Monster Hunter X can also boast such an achievement as the latest instalment in the series, continues to sell. Now although just a single 3 million Wii U’s sold in Japan, doesn’t sound all that, Nintendo are out-selling Sony, as the PlayStation has still yet to break the 3 million barrier in Japan, despite having sold 35.9 million units worldwide. Even the New Nintendo 3DS XL is doing well for itself, with the handheld still being a favourite purchase for gamers.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (THE FIVE YEAR QUEST)
Now just what is our big news story of the week, well it’s got to be Terry Garrett. Not everyone possesses the gift of sight, but Terry did not let that stop him from playing and finishing Ocarina of Time. Sure it took him almost five years to do so, he took the time to sit there and play it, getting to this pivotal moment. I can remember how I first felt when I beat the game on the N64, but to do just that with the lack of sight, going up against gaming mechanics of each dungeon and actually beat them and the boss that resides in them, that’s true skill! Sure some people can speed-run the entire game in eighteen minutes and others can best a couple of dungeons whilst blindfolded, but to do so as a blind person, that is true achievement and dedication. For this, from the Miketendo64 team, it is hats off to you Terry, your feat is truly commendable!
