It may come as a surprise to some but it has been officially announced that Charles Martinet, AKA the Voice of Super Mario is stepping down from the role. Nintendo has released a statement to say that Charles, who has been voicing Mario since just before Super Mario 64, will no longer be recording new lines for the mustachioed hero and has been being given a new role as a Mario Ambassador.

With Charles’ new role, he will be able to continue travelling the world and bringing joy to Mario fans at conventions, events, and wherever else he may go. An official video featuring Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles Martinet will be made public soon, which will focus on what the future holds for Charles and Super Mario.
For anyone wondering about Super Mario Wonder and whether Charles has any involvement, according to IGN, a Nintendo spokesperson has said that “While Charles is not involved in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, we’re excited to honor his legacy and contributions, including looking ahead to what he’ll be doing as a Mario Ambassador,”
It will be strange to think of anyone else voicing Super Mario in the video games but Charles Martinet as we go forward, especially as it was Charles that gave life and personality to the character and many others in the Super Mario universe. We had the honour and the privilege of meeting and talking with him back in 2016 when we attended a gaming convention in Barcelona. He is such a brilliant, charming, and wholesome man who can light up the room with just a smile and it will be difficult for us to think that anyone will be able to bring the same energy and light to the role of Mario as Charles has. That said, we do wish whoever picks up the mantle of Mario all the best in their endeavour, and we are sure they already know that they have very large shoes to fill. As for Charles, should you find yourself reading this, we thank you, good sir, for the many years of happiness you have brought us since our childhoods and continue to do so.
