President Furukawa reiterates plans spanning games, the live-action movie, music, and merchandise while confirming ongoing movie production beyond Zelda.
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has reiterated that the company will continue The Legend of Zelda 40th anniversary activities through the rest of 2026 and into 2027. The statement, made in connection with the latest financial results briefing, emphasises a multi-format approach: “Over the course of this year and next, we will pursue a variety of initiatives to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. In addition to games, we will expand opportunities for consumers to experience its world through the movie, music, character merchandise, and more.”
The live-action film titled The Legend of Zelda is confirmed for theatres on April 30, 2027. Music plans include the worldwide 40th Anniversary Concert tour (Japan starting January 2027, with North America, Europe, and Australia dates following). Merchandise continues with items such as Hasbro’s electronic Master Sword, LEGO sets, amiibo, and other collectibles scheduled for 2027. The just-released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake on Nintendo Switch 2 is the most immediate game-related piece of the celebration.
Separately, Furukawa noted that Nintendo intends to continue delivering movies in the years that follow the Zelda film, working carefully with partners while establishing a framework that supports ongoing production. The two animated Mario films have already surpassed a combined $2 billion in worldwide box office. These comments reinforce Nintendo’s longer-term IP expansion strategy beyond pure software while keeping the Zelda anniversary as a clear focus through next year.
