Mario’s cinematic debut pushed back another year…

In a stroke of bad news, for those who were working forwards to finally seeing the animated Super Mario movie this year, be prepared for some disappointment. In an announcement that comes straight from Miyamoto, the film will now release in 2023, but we do have some dates to go with this news. The Super Mario film will debut in cinemas on April 7 in and April 29 for Japanese audiences. Miyamoto’s full words on the delay can be seen below:

This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023–April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My deepest apologies but I promise it will be well worth the wait.

The upcoming animated film was first announced in 2018, with Matthew Fogel on board, handling the screenplay and both Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, handling directing duties. With regards to the announced voice cast, a reminder can be seen here:
