GUNPIG: Firepower For Hire

EXPlay GUNPIG: Firepower For Hire (Nintendo Switch)

GUNPIG: Firepower For Hire is a top-down arcade, twin-stick shooter. You play as Bax Torpini, a pig who works in pest control and is tasked with clearing out pest that have infested a space station. Bax pilots a small craft and and can fire laser blasts and other projectiles at pests to defeat them.

Being a twin-stick shooter, you can control the movement of the craft with the left joystick and change the direction it is facing with the right joystick. The ZL/ZR trigger buttons are to fire your primary weapon and the L/R shoulder buttons activate your secondary weapon. Most of the enemies that you face are basic fodder but you will encounter stronger enemies that will take a constant barrage  in order to defeat them.

As you defeat enemies, some will drop an item that you can pick up, which will increase your score. The boss also drops an item that, after it has been collected, will succesfully end the mission. There are also a number of different weapon sorts that are depicted with a type of food item like an apple, orange, peanut, avocado, etc. These can change the type of ammunition of your main weapon and your secondary weapon. You can find a type that works best with you and stick with it or change it up when you feel like it. There are other items you can find that can have an effect on your craft. It can slow down, speed up, and even increase firepower.

The main idea of the game, much like any arcade game, is to increase your score. This is done by killing pests, defeating enemies and completing the mission as quickly as possible. There is a bonus for how quickly you complet each mission which depletes over time. It is ultimately up to you whether you wish to kill everything in sight or head straight to the big bad and kill it ASAP.

GUNPIG: Firepower For Hire is a surprisingly fun game that is good for killing time. It may feel a bit repetitive over time but it is best enjoyed in short bursts rather than in engrossingly long sessions. That said, when you have started working up a wicked high score, it may be tricky to put the game down.
