Hey folks, welcome to the feature series we call “EXPlay.” A series of feature articles where we share our experience on games we’ve recently played in the form of written views and captured gameplay footage. To kick off the first instalment, today we’re all about Apparition by developer MrCiastku.
EXPlay Apparition: (Nintendo Switch)
Apparition is a first-person horror game that follows a paranormal investigator on a personal mission to prove the existence of the paranormal. He sets out to the infamous Green Creek, which has been known to be haunted by apparitions, spirits, and demons. Armed with only a camera, an audio recorder, and a spirit board, it is up to you to find evidence of the Paranormal and live long enough to tell the tale.
Starting off in the forest next to a rural road, you must investigate the nearby cabins and camping area. You must find clues about what happened here and gather up scraps of paper with questions on them. You can use these questions to ask the spirits that you summon with the spirit board to find out what happened to them like how they died? If they are a good spirit? and so on.
You must always watch your back as you get the feeling that you are never quite alone. Be it whispers in the wind or footsteps that are not your own. The apparitions don’t like being recorded and will lash out at you. Not all sounds are made by a ghost though. Some are just jump scares to keep you on edge. Still, should the sounds actually come from an apparition, You must be quick on your feet and get back to the car or find somewhere to hide if you are to survive this ordeal. If the jump scares are too much for you, you can just turn them off in the settings menu.
You can earn experience points in Apparition by taking photographic evidence of the paranormal. These points will allow you to unlock better gear. However, you only keep experience points if you survive your ordeal. You will find that your sessions will be quite short in the beginning as you scramble to collect experience points and run back to your car. Once you have enough points, you can use them to purchase better gear and more important gear like the crowbar which will let you inside the basement in one of the cabins.
If you enjoy horror games that keep you on edge and have a learning curve that requires you to learn from previous mistakes and get better each time, Apparition could certainly be a game for you. It certainly isn’t for everyone but perhaps it could be a game that is right up your alley.
