In continuation with #MarioWeek at Miketendo64, it’s time to hit you with another Mario & Me, the mini-series where developers, Miketendo64 staff and even Friends of Miketendo64 reveal just how much Mario means to all of us.
Taking the stage in today’s first of 2 instalments, is none other than someone associated with Zoink Games and that someone is Mikael Forslind! Here’s what he had to say when undergoing our Quick Fire round:
Q1. Name and/or Known Alias? I’m Mikael Forslind and I go by the same name on Twitter and everywhere else.
Q2. First Mario game you played? Can’t remember for sure but it was either Mario Bros or Super Mario Bros on the Famicom. I had a Famicom before I had a NES.
Q3. Last Mario game you played? I played Super Mario Odyssey at Gamescom a few months ago. It was really cool!
Q4. Favourite Power-up? I thought the cloud thing in one of the Super Mario Galaxy games was really cool. If I remember it correctly you spun around and created a cloud. It was technical and fun to use! Oh, and of course the weird shoe power-up in Super Mario Bros 3.
Q5. Least favourite Power-up? Can’t really think of any that I dislike.
Q6. Favourite Boss Battle? There’s this giant mecha robot thing in Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2 that is really huge and really cool looking!
Q7. Least favourite Boss Battle? Not a big fan of Birdo (that’s her/his name right?) The egg-spitting weird enemy from Super Mario Bros 2. I always thought that looked weird when I was a kid. – (Yes, Birdo is its name.)
Q8. Mario or Luigi? I remember when we were kids and played Mario and Luigi in the schoolyard. I was always Mario and my best friend was Luigi. We ran around the schoolyard jumping and destroying imaginary blocks. So Mario, of course.
Q9. Princess Peach or Princess Daisy? I don’t know? Is Daisy the one with the yellow dress? Both are cool I think. – (Yes, Daisy is the one in the yellow dress.)
Q10. Metal Mario or Rabbid Mario? Metal Mario is really cool. I haven’t played Rabbid Mario yet.
Q11. Frog Suit or Racoon Suit? The frog suit of course. It helped you swim faster right? Since I normally hate water levels I want all the help I can get.
Q12. Goombas or Koopa Troopers? Koopa Troopas.
Q13. Super Mario Odyssey, physical or digital purchase? I’m getting the physical edition. I’m old school like that.
Q14. Playing Mario alone, or with a friend? I’m going to play Super Mario Odyssey with my wife. Really looking forward to that.
Q15. Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, or Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2? I think the Super Mario Galaxy games are one of the best games ever made so definitely those two!
And from short(ish) answers, it is time we moved on to the longer answers, so here’s the Final Three round:
What does Mario and his associated franchise mean to you?
There are so many Mario games out there and I can’t say I’ve played them all but I played the big ones and I enjoy them all. I’ve been playing Mario Games since the mid eighties and to this day I’m a huge fan of platforming games, something I think the Mario games have have had a lot to do with.
What is a Mario moment you will always treasure?
Two moments comes to mind. The first one was back in 1997. Me and a couple of friends went to the store for the release of the Nintendo 64. We were expecting massive lines of people but when we got there there were just one or two outside the store. We still had an awesome day and playing Mario 64 was one of the coolest gaming experiences I ever had. The other moment was when a real orchestra here in Sweden put up a show with only music from video games and it was not only one of the best gaming experiences in my life, it was one of the best experiences in my entire life. The music was so beautiful I kept crying during the entire show.
What are you most looking forwards to doing in Super Mario Odyssey?
I actually don’t know much about it. If I already know I want a game I don’t read anything or watch any videos about it. I just get it when it’s out. If anything, I tend to 100% these kind of games so looking forward to that. Nowadays though, games have been getting kinda bloated with collectibles (Breath of the Wild) so let’s hope Odyssey doesn’t suffer from that.
Mikael, it is always a pleasure talking to you, as you always have such great responses, so thank you. Like those before you, you have made your mark on #MarioWeek and should any of our readers feel like contributing, here are the two ways you can do so:
