Just when you think you’ve heard of everything #Pokemon20 has to offer to celebrate the anniversary, they announce more! And this time a touch of Kanto has reached Super Mario Maker! Why unlock one mere costume from a new event course, when you can unlock three? As part of the #Pokemon20 celebrations, the original starters are now available to be unlocked in Super Mario Maker, thanks to an all new event course, a course which will see your journey as a would-be Pokémon trainer begin!
Who’d have thought that a Super Mario Maker visit to Professor Oak’s Lab would see you faced with the decision to choose between three great Pokémon, who each have their own “level” for you to explore. Charmander must dance between flames. Squirtle must slip and slide his way across the ice, while Bulbasaur swings from vine to vine, but unlike the Pokémon games, here you can actually walk away with all three, but it does mean you will have to play through the level three times as each Pokémon to unlock them and if you haven’t tried the level for yourself yet, you can find its information below and below that, is a trailer of the starters in action:
I Choose You!
This course is based on the start of any Pokémon trainer’s journey – from choosing your first partner in Professor Oak’s Lab, through to reaching the first Gym. Clear the course to receive a costume of whichever Pokémon you chose! Unlike in the original games, it shouldn’t be too hard to clear it multiple times and catch ‘em all!
For a lot of us, Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle were the starters that started it all for us, they started our Pokémon trainer journey and they made games that would become an unforgettable series. You never forget your first Pokémon, or your first game, my Pokémon Red Charmander will always have a special place in my heart, but with more Pokémon joining the huge line up of costumes, I can’t help but feel Charmeleon is sorely missing.
Better yet, Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow may be old, but they are not forgotten, for all three will be coming to the 3DS eShop on the 27th of February, as part of the 20th anniversary of an iconic series. The path of a Pokémon Master is never ending.
