I did not have this on my bingo card for 2026 but I will happily take it. Nintendo has updated Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch 2 (sorry Switch 1 owners). The new 4.0 update is quite a big one in terms of ambition. First and foremost, local multiplayer has been expanded to include 5, 6, 7, and 8 players. The wild thing is that it is not limited to docked mode either, oh no. You can play up to 8-players in handheld mode as well!
That isn’t all though, Nintendo has not finished cooking as Camera Play has also been made available for up to four players providing you have a compatible USB-C camera connected. But, wait, there is more. The resolution has been improved, loading times have been reduced, and VS. Race now has a 96 race option. This means that you can now play through every single circuit currently available in a single sitting.
It’s incredible that even though we have Mario Kart World on Nintendo Switch 2, we are still getting updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I suppose it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise though. After all, the game has sold over 71.53 million copies, and Nintendo are known to confound and astound its fans with the most unlikeliest of announcements and updates.
Well, I guess it’s time for me to jump back into Mario Kart 8 Deluxe once again. Local group gaming sessions and Tournaments have just gotten even more interesting.
