Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering A Little Golf Journey by developer Okidokico.
A Little Golf Journey: (The Explanation)
A Little Golf Journey is a minimalistic take on golf that removes the overly complicated game of video game golf with something subtle and relaxing. Where the typical golf game mechanics would normally be in place, and maybe in the way of the gamer, A Little Golf Story goes with the bare minimum.
The overworld map reminds me of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. You navigate the overworld by moving towards the next available hole in hopes of hitting a score that unlocks the next hole or secrets found within the game. As you play and complete holes the world around you comes to life with animation and colors.
After selecting the hole, you start off at the tee. Before you take your first shot you will want to pan around the course checking out the lay of the land and seeing if there are shortcuts that will allow you to get to the hole faster. Once you observe your surroundings and come up with a game plan you can take your shot. You can use your focus shot for better accuracy when aiming for the pin while also controlling the lie of your ball. Just like most golf games you are going to want to avoid trees, tall grass, and sand traps. Along your path to the green, you may spot secret blocks that will unlock alternate paths to hidden courses.
A Little Golf Journey is a zen-like golf game with a great soundtrack and unique art style. It won’t win awards for a realistic take on the sport, but it may just win your heart with the approach it takes in paving its way as a surrealist version of links.
