Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering Electro Ride by developer Sylwester Osik.
Electro Ride: The Neon Racing (The Explanation)
In an alternate reality where the Eastern Bloc still stands strong, Racers come together in their neon colored rides and race against each other in Electro Ride: The Neon Racing. Choose a classic car and take to the streets of Warsaw, Varna, Prague, East Berlin, and Moscow. Show everyone that you have the skills on the road that will leave everyone behind as you cross the finish line.
Electro Ride: The Neon Racing is a challenging arcade racing game that will have you fight for pole position whilst trying to keep your vehicle on the road. A single error in judgement is all it takes to go from first to last and it will be a struggle to regain the top spot again. You will race against unforgiving AI that will waste no time overtaking you and leaving you to eat their dust as they burn rubber.
There are three main game modes in Electro Ride: The Neon Racing which, are then broken into smaller sub game modes. Story Mode is the principle game mode that will have you racing across 20+ tracks set in numerous European cities. Quick Race consists of Time Attack, Last Man Standing, and Ghost Mode. The last game mode is Splitscreen where up to two-players can race against each other in Time Attack and Last Man Standing.
On every track, you will encounter stars and “color sensitive boost strips”. The Stars will change the colour of your vehicle into the color that was on the star. The boost strips can give you a boost in speed providing that your car is the same color as the strip you are in contact with. Staying on the track is not a simple affair as taking a corner wrong or colliding with another vehicle can spin you out of control and off the track. Fortunately, with the press of the Y button, you will return to the track but you will have to work hard to recover lost ground.
Electro Ride: The Neon Racing is a big fan of the ’80s neon visuals and synthwave music and dare I say it, gameplay. The driving physics in particular will test your skills every step of the way. The music itself definitely has the ’80s theme dow ifn but seems to be really choppy during cutscenes. Be sure to watch our video gameplay to see exactly what we mean.
