Nintendo Switch Online

The Nintendo Switch Online service will be launching next month and will require a paid membership to play most games online. Some games however, may not need to use the paid service to be played online. These games are ‘Free-To-Play’ titles.

A number of games on the Nintendo Switch eShop that list online play as one of their features, has a small notice in the fine print which reads:

“To use online services you must have access to a wireless internet connection. Some online services may not be available in all countries. From the full launch of the Nintendo Switch Online membership service in 2018, online play requires a paid membership.”

Free-to-play games on the other hand, do not yet have this notice which, may point to not necessarily needing the Nintendo Switch Online Service in order to play online. Some free-to-play games include:

Paladins
Fortnite
Pokémon Quest
Dawn of the Breakers
Fallout Shelter
Galak-Z: Variant S
Zaccaria Pinball
The Pinball Arcade
Kitten Squad
Pinball FX3

This has not been made official yet and it may just be a matter of time before the notice gets plastered on all games with online play. Nintendo did say that they would announce more about the Nintendo Switch Online Service before it launches in September. Now that we are in August, we should hear more about it soon.
