After more than 30 years, the studio behind Mass Effect and Dragon Age is shutting down!
In deeply saddening news for long-time fans, BioWare has confirmed it is closing its doors after more than three decades. Early development on the next Mass Effect project has also been cancelled.
The studio posted a heartfelt statement listing its most beloved titles — Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Anthem — before delivering the difficult news. “Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending,” the statement read. “There is nothing easy about writing those words.”
The closure comes as part of wider restructuring at Electronic Arts, which is laying off approximately 400 staff (around 3% of its workforce). Roughly 50 of those roles were at BioWare. The decision follows EA’s recent $55 billion acquisition and a strategic shift toward fewer large-scale projects.
For a few of us at Miketendo64, Mass Effect 3 on the Nintendo Wii U was the gateway that led to playing the full trilogy on PC, purchasing merchandise, and even attending a Mass Effect panel at MCM London Comic Con last October. Not going to lie, this one hits particularly hard. How does this news make you feel?
