“Top-down is here to stay.”

In a new interview between Eiji Aonuma and Famitsu, Aonuma has reiterated Nintendo’s desire to keep producing top-down titles alongside their larger 3D counterparts, stating they wish to carry over the mechanics of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, but integrate them with new elements to keep newer entries fresh and have players say, “So this is what they are doing this time?” Aonuma’s full comments can be seen here:

Eiji Aonuma: The top-down gameplay style that has been used continuously in the series is very ‘Zelda-like’, and we’d like to keep this up as a contrast to the dynamic 3D games. We want to not just create something that inherits the mechanics of Echoes of Wisdom, but add new elements to make people go, ‘So this is what they’re doing this time?’.

About The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom:

Save the kingdom of Hyrule – this time with the wisdom of Princess Zelda – in The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom for Nintendo Switch – The people of Hyrule are being stolen away by strange rifts that have appeared, and with a certain swordsman among those missing, it’s up to Princess Zelda to save her kingdom.

Team up with the mysterious fairy, Tri, and use the power of the Tri Rod to learn how to create echoes, imitations of things found in the environment. You can then recreate those echoes whenever you like to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

Create echoes like water blocks to reach new heights, make bridges out of old beds, throw rocks at foes, or find your own creative combination of echoes to do things your way. You can even create echoes of monsters to fight at your side in combat!
