In the early hours of today for the West, Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has stated on social media via Nintendo Co Ltd’s official Twitter account that Nintendo Swtich games will be playable on the Nintendo Switch successor.

“This is Furukawa. At today’s Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”

Now, this is certainly great news as there has been a lot of speculation on whether the Switch successor will support backwards compatibility or not and if Ninstendo Switch Online will carry over. Of course, now a new question arises on whether backwards compatibility includes both physical and digital games (meaning that the Switch successor may still use cartridges) or if it will be digital only.

I guess only time will tell, but at least backwards compatibility has been confirmed for the next system, so we can be happy knowing our collection of games can still be played on the coming console.
