As someone who just loves video game events, I was ecstatic to hear that the largest video game event in Spain was making a full return this year. Gamepolis is held at the FYMCA Palacio de Ferías in Malaga, Andalusia, and after being demoted to a smaller external fair for the last two years due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, it is back at full force and even bigger than before. This year, Gamepolis VIII Edición (8th edition) is expected to open its doors to 70,000 people! What makes it extra special is that Nintendo Iberica AKA Nintendo Spain has returned once again to sponsor the event and has a significant presence with many of their games playable for the public.
Nintendo has several booths and areas dedicated to Nintendo Switch games like Nintendo Switch Sports, Mario Stikers Battle League, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and older games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The areas dedicated to Nintendo Swtich Sports are set up under tents sporting the game’s logo and have tennis nets cordoning the area.
Aside from Nintendo’s dominant presence there were area booths set up for other video games on other platforms like PC, PS5, and VR. The Indies arena had many up and coming games from developers based around Andalusia. Although there wasn’t any seemingly coming to Switch, there were some that mighr be worth looking out for in case they do like… The Occultists, Kiddo, Jin Jan, DROID, Aurora’s Journey and Bubble Ghost Remake.
For those that love their video game and anime merchandise, there were plenty of booths with so much merch including T-shirts, mugs, figures & figurines, Replica swords, and more. I didn’t see any booths selling video games though which was kind of curious as a video game-focused event has so much stuff dedicated to anime but not a lot to actual video games themselves; merchandise yes but actual games on cartridges and discs, no.
Still, what was available to buy was very tempting and if I wasn’t watching my pennies, I would have easily gave into temptation and stuck my bank account in the red. Most of the figures on sale were around 30-45€ but there were quite a number asking for 75€ and above.
Throughout the weekend, Gamepolis has a number of eSports tournaments being held at the event as well as special talks with a number of developers and influential people in the gaming industry and community. One such person who will be given a talk is Eva Gaspar from Abylight Studios (Hyper Light Drifter, Super Hydorah, Cursed Castilla) and will talk about being an Indie Developer in this day and age. The talk itself will be on Saturday and we do hope to attend and meet Eva in person.
We will be back with Part 2 of our Gamepolis VIII Edición coverage tomorrow. Thank you for reading and stay tuned!Tags: Feature, Gamepolis, Nintendo, Nintendo Spain, Nintendo Switch, video games, Video Games Event
