Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this instalment, we’re covering the WarioWare: Get it Together! demo by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo EPD.
WarioWare: Get it Together! Demo: (The Explanation)
Wario and Waluigi might make a fantastic pairing, especially for tennis and causing mayhem, but be it with his lanky friend, on his own exploring wonderous, but hazardous lands or just having out with the team in Diamond City, adventure awaits Wario at every turn and now the time has come for him to have his own debut adventure on the Nintendo Switch.
The full game isn’t out yet, but with less than three weeks to go, a very brilliant demo of WarioWare: Get it Together! has released on the eShop and this bite-sized delight of micro mini-game mania, is a very succulent appetiser indeed. The demo only offers a brief condensed experience compared to the full game, which has more than 200 microgames, but it does at least allow players to watch a wicked cutscene where most characters are voice, but Wario says the bare minimum, and it allows players to go hands-on with a small cast of the game’s very different characters.
You see, in this adventure, Wario and co. have created the game and naturally, it has horribly backfired and the game has sucked all our fan favourite characters into the game and now it is time for them to be the protagonists and solve the microgames with the player’s assistance. After a quick character redesign to get them into the game, WarioWare: Get it Together! gives each character a unique special ability and method of movement, resulting in multiple ways to complete the same game.
So, instead of being a game and demo, where players must learn very specific Joy-Con controls like in 1-2-Switch, you need only to learn how each character performs, which is a very interesting and playful take, which helps to propel WarioWare into a bold new direction, whilst feeling familiar at the same time and offering up a whole lot more replay value.
In around one single hour of gameplay, players should easily be able to master each of the six to seven demo characters, Wario, Young Cricket, 18-Volt, Mona, Kat & Ana with Kat available for 1-player and Ana available via 2-player and Orbulon. You’ll also get the chance to see and play every microgame supported in the demo, which includes the brand new Splatoon one, and as long as you’ve got someone to play with, you’ll even get a chance to try out the demo’s multiplayer function.
Sadly, as a demo, players will not get a chance to experience the game’s story, or any of its other modes, but don’t let that put a sour taste in your mouth, because if there were any fears that WarioWare: Get it Together! wouldn’t be able to live up to the likes of WarioWare: Smooth Moves and WarioWare Gold, this demo does a wonderful job of reminding us of just whimsical and inventive WarioWare as a series is.
A new direction is being explored and the different characters with different abilities is a fantastic game changer based on everything seen so far. So, if you haven’t pre-ordered yet, play the demo and see how you feel about it afterwards. It might just make a believer of you yet.
