Hey folks, welcome to the feature series we call “EXPlay.” A series of feature articles where we share our experience on games we’ve recently played in the form of written views and captured gameplay footage. In this instalment, we are all about Chicken Police – Paint it RED! by developer The Wild Gentlemen.
EXPlay Chicken Police – Paint it RED!: (Nintendo Switch)
What do you get when you try to recreate the classic noir cinematic experience, make it into a point-and-click game and replace human heads with those of various animals? The answer is Chicken Police – Paint it RED!, and it is a game you’ll get more than you bargained for, the more you play it.
On a visual scale, this point-and-click game is gorgeous, and so should it be. By using real photos and “photo-realistic 3D backgrounds” Chicken Police is a visually stunning adventure that casts Santino “Sonny” Featherland” as the lead protagonist as it takes him on a wild ride.
With more than 8 hours of professionally recorded dialogue to bring the game’s 30+ characters to life, there really is a lot to see and do and these interactions aren’t just limited to simple conversations as Sonny can give players his thoughts on each character he meets and he can ask them a series of questions and when it’s relevant to his case, he can even interrogate certain characters and depending on what you ask, will bring up different follow-up questions.
In keeping with the noir cinematic experience, however, there are more than 20 cutscenes for players to enjoy, a shooting range minigame, achievements to earn, a gallery to fill and an original soundtrack that does the game justice. What’s more, there are more than 30 locations to explore, with many things to discover, such as new clues, hidden secrets and more. The city of Clawville is yours to enjoy.
Packed with a lot of cynical humour and hopelessness befitting its noir genre, Chicken Police – Paint it RED! is an engaging tale that needs to be seen to be believed. It’s not your usual crime drama and it’s certainly not suitable for younger audiences due to its tones and forgive me for this, fowl language, but if you like your point-and-click games to be dark, mysterious and diligent in its design, there’s a lot to enjoy about this one.
