EXPlay Picklock

Hey folks, welcome to the feature series we call “EXPlay.” A series of feature articles where we share our experience on games we’ve recently played in the form of written views and captured gameplay footage. In this instalment, we are all about Picklock by developer Deqaf Studio.

EXPlay Picklock

EXPlay Picklock: (Nintendo Switch)

Picklock is a stealth-puzzle game set in a voxel world and follows a thief that goes by the alias ‘Picklock’. Fed up with living an honest life, Picklock decides to return to a life of crime. He starts small by stealing menial items like toilet paper from his neighbour’s house and works his way up to performing heists on stores, cinemas and high security buildings.

Each robbery location has a number of items available to steal. These can be anything from the aforementioned toilet roll to children’s toys, lost purses and cold hard cash straight from the register. the robberies aren’t always straightforward either. Some places have guards and security cameras that you will need to make your way past without being detected. If you get caught, you will have to restart the mission. Could be worse though, you could be doing a stint for 5-10 years. Still, while you can palm everything required to 100% each stage, it isn’t completely necessary. You can make your exit at any time by returning to your vehicle to end the mission.

Picklock isn’t always steal, rob, and thieve though. As you become wealthier with thanks to your ill-gotten gains, you can spend it on improving your living accomodation, buying expensive cars or even on island getaways. Of course, you can alway go to the local bar for a relaxing drink or get a private dance at the gentlemen’s club.

As you get further into the game, you will recieve new tools like a crowbar, drill, and soldering iron to help make your robberies easier. The more times you use each item, the more you will increase your proficiency with them, making the process of using them much faster. When it comes to stealing, time is of the essence and when there are guards nearby, you really don’t need the inconvenience of being detected and dive tackled to the ground.

Picklock is surprisingly addictive. Even after getting caught multiple times on the same mission, I still feel compelled to give it another go, and another go after that until I’ve beaten it. If you enjoy puzzle games that make you think but not too much then this may be a game that interests you. Sneaking around while you break into other people’s properties, grabbing any items of value whilst evading getting caught, it is all kinds of morally wrong packaged in an amusing, voxel way.
