Mario Party Star Rush: First Impressions
I recieved my copy of Mario Party Star Rush for 3DS this morning. So my review is based on roughly two hours of play.
The main game mode is Toad Scramble where you have to play as toad and make your way around a board. You each roll the dice and move at the same time. The movement is more free roaming where you can often move in any direction. I did find most of the boards a bit small though.
The aim is to collect coins around the board and during mini games, so that later on you can trade every 10 coins for a star. Each board also has usually between 3 and 5 bosses. Each player works together to defeat them but the player with the most points wins a star. For example the player who has hit the boss with the most shells.
Another feature of the game is recruiting other characters(allies) to your team such as Peach, Wario, Daisy etc. Having them can give you an advantage as they can help you during certain mini games/bosses and add extra moves to your roll amongst other things.
You can also collect items that steals another players coins or slows them down etc. Some boards have item shops for trading coins for items.
At the end of each game bonus coins are awarded for things like the player who moved across the least squares, who didn’t have an ally “loner award”, daft things that you would expect from a Mario Party game. So everything can change at the end of the game.
The mini games are a lot of fun and make the game worth playing.
There are other modes such as Coinathlon which was a lot of fun. It is a dice free game where you race to the finish playing mini games. There is also Balloon Bash, Challenge Tower and Mario Shuffle, but I haven’t got to those yet.
There is no online multiplayer which will disappoint a lot of people. But you can play via local or download play with up to 4 players, and you only need one copy of the game.
The game is also amiibo compatible- this makes other allies appear.
Overall the game is quite fun even when playing solo but there was a few points that let it down such as lack of online multiplayer and the fact the series isn’t as good as it used to be in my opinion. But I do enjoy this one a lot more than I enjoyed Island Tour.
Like I mentioned the mini games make it worth playing and it is a fun break between playing other games.
I score it 7.5/10
