In this explanatory review, we’re covering Etrange Overlord by developer, Gemdrops, Inc., with involvement from SuperNiche LLC., and BROCCOLI Co.:
Etrange Overlord (Nintendo Switch)
From the creative mind that birthed Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure! and the Disgaea series, comes a brand-new action RPG that only Sōhei Niikawa could come up with. And now, as of March 26, 2026, Etrange Overlord is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, with the Nintendo Switch version also playable on Nintendo Switch 2.
As a joint effort between SuperNiche, Gemdrops, and BROCCOLI and NIS America onboard as publisher, Etrange Overlord is the story of protagonist Étrange von Rosenburg and her journey in becoming, you guessed it, an overlord. But what sets her upon this path? A public execution.
Sentenced to death, Etrange Overlord throws players into the literal deep end by ending Étrange von Rosenburg’s story, so that a new one could begin, in Hell of all places. Death is not the end, for it is a cliffhanger that simply ties into the sequel.
Nevertheless, Étrange von Rosenburg takes being wrongly accused of assassinating the king in her stride, for she is no mere woman. Born into an influential family and armed with magical powers of the dark arts, there is not a single thing Étrange can’t do if she puts her mind to it.
So, as the forces of Hell attempt to punish this new sinner, Hell is quick to learn Étrange won’t go down easily and before you know it, as long as there are plenty of sweets for her to scoff down, Hell becomes her playground and even Heaven can’t keep this heroine down. Not when her charm, her power and sheer magnitude draws foes in, converts them to friends and has them join her cause.
But just because she can prosper in Hell and beyond, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy. Across the game’s three main regions, home to a total of twelve conquerable areas, Étrange must fight her way through many foes and bosses should she wish to claim the title of overlord for herself.
In terms of gameplay, as an action RPG, each battle is comprised of a stage in which Étrange must defeat enemies or accomplish a certain goal and since we already touched on the fact she can get allies, battles are not just limited to her. With new allies available at every turn, each battle can be fought with a party comprised of four characters.
Unless a certain character is fixed, players are free to select their preferred characters from those available, but while most battles have a simple premise of defeating all enemies, there are other stages where you will need to complete a specific mission. Be it capturing all keeps or transporting a certain number of items to a container on your side of the map.
But while players are free to switch between each character and attack willy-nilly, Etrange Overlord has a special mechanic that turns gameplay on its head, thanks to a sushi-inspired mechanic.
By implementing lanes that can transport buff-granting items, bombs and health items around each given map, Etrange Overlord certainly knows how to keep combat on the go. But while it can seem tame at first when introduced, it’s not until you advance further into the game that you can start selecting what benefits you want your lanes delivering and levelling them up to increase their effectiveness.
Moreover, since Etrange Overlord is not just a single player title, multiplayer is supported, allowing up to four players to come together and play, resulting in high octane gameplay that can vary greatly depending on each person’s progress.
As for something else that can be levelled up, provided you have all of the necessary materials and Darks, an in-game currency, is a character’s weapon. It’s slow-going at first, as the feature won’t even be available to you straight away, but it’s a required act as it is the only way of strengthening each character, since they don’t gain experience and level up.
Additionally, when doing the battles, each stage will task players with certain requirements. Only one will be visible the first time you do a stage, but by beating it, additional requirements will be revealed and completing these additional missions will help to raise Étrange’s Happy Life rank, which rewards players with all kinds of good things, from increased lane slots, items and a ton of Darks.
But just in case dialogue before a stage and after a stage are not enough to fully expand the entire story of Etrange Overlord and character motivations, don’t you fret, other stages exist. Not only can recipes be used to unlock new dishes that can provide buffs in battle, but Chef Stories are cute little exchanges between Étrange and her allies, which when finished, rewards you with a new recipe to try out when you get a chance.
And just in case more character exchanges are necessary, as each one helps with the worldbuilding of Etrange Overlord, there’s also Side Stories. These episodes make for a vital watch, especially when a few of them cover the exact reason why Étrange had to die in the first place.
True to Sōhei Niikawa’s roots, Etrange Overlord is packed with original songs that play during key story moments and battles. The soundtrack is energetic and catchy, often blending whimsical melodies with surprisingly emotional tracks. While not every song reaches the heights of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure!, the best ones still manage to stick with you long after playing.
Moreover, because this is a game about taking over Hell and more, as more allies join Étrange’s cause, players will unlock the means to dispatch friends to settle revolts in exchange for rewards. Anyone dispatched can still be used in any given stage when you need them, so you don’t ever have to be afraid of dispatching a favourite character. And in case the game proves a little too hard in its default difficulty, you can always enable Sweets Mode difficulty, which reduces battle difficulty in favour of creating a more relaxed gameplay experience for those who simply wish to enjoy the story of Etrange Overlord.
Now, while the game does support English text, in terms of audio, Etrange Overlord only supports Japanese. But with Sōhei Niikawa directing the narrative and character designs brought to life by Shinichiro Otsuka, we wouldn’t want Etrange Overlord any other way.
In conclusion, with all the charm of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure!, far more songs than you could expect and the sense of humour Disgaea is beloved for, while not for everyone, Etrange Overlord is a humorous hell-bound, musical odyssey that definitely lives up to its predecessors’ shadows. So, in terms of Sōhei Niikawa’s gamble of stepping down as President of Nippon Ichi Software to become more involved with video game development and creating a new development studio of his own, it certainly paid off!
