Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem

Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores, but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, all whilst including some lengthy gameplay, to give you, the reader, the chance to form your own impressions and views while reading and watching.

In this explanatory review, we’re covering Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem by developer 3DClouds:

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem lets you crush, flip, and destroy with a lineup of nearly two dozen Monster Trucks, each with unique designs and stunts and larger-than-life challenges within each section of the game. Boss battles have the player driving through a giant gorilla or a venomous snake’s mouth among other arenas. These moments capture the spirit of Hot Wheels’ imaginative playsets, but the game’s repetitive objectives dampen the fun. Whether smashing hot dog stands or popping balloons, every mission boils down to the same basic tasks, leaving little room for variety.

Controlling these mechanical beasts is a balancing act—literally. While performing stunts like barrel rolls or backflips feels intuitive, the trucks often feel too floaty and lack the weight you’d expect from these massive machines. Misjudged jumps and frequent tipping over can turn daring combos into frustrating tumbles. Younger players might overlook these issues, but seasoned gamers will find the gameplay falls short of its potential.

The Monster Trucks themselves are a visual treat, with every detail lovingly recreated to match their toy counterparts. From the fangs of Tiger Shark to the fiery decals on Bone Shaker, each truck oozes personality. Unfortunately, the environments don’t share the same charm. Whether you’re tearing through Junkyard Valley or Toxic Town, the arenas feel lifeless, populated by repetitive objects and a crowd of three identical fans in different-colored shirts.

Performance on the Nintendo Switch is a bit of a mixed bag. While Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem delivers sharp visuals on many of the track pieces and the trucks themselves, gameplay was a bit all over the place. I played primarily on the TV in docked mode, and there were a few times within each of the arenas that framerates stumbled and I saw blurry textures and inconsistent resolution. This disparity in quality makes the game feel undercooked on the Switch and makes it hard to recommend if you own another more powerful console.

The audio of the game is as forgettable as a flat tire. The announcer, initially enthusiastic, quickly becomes repetitive, spouting the same half-dozen lines until you’re tempted to hit mute. Even in one short arena match you will hear the same audio clip over and over again. The music fares no better, with uninspired tracks that fail to capture the high-octane energy Monster Trucks deserve. A game like this screams for an adrenaline-pumping soundtrack, but instead, it offers background noise that feels like an afterthought.

Sound effects like crunching metal and roaring engines add a touch of authenticity but are overshadowed by the game’s otherwise lackluster audio design. For a game focused on larger-than-life stunts and destruction, the audio leaves little impression, making it hard to stay engaged during long play sessions.

Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem is a colorful, kid-friendly introduction to the world of Monster Trucks, offering flashy stunts and massive destruction in bite-sized doses. Its boss-focused gameplay and creative vehicle designs deliver moments of fun, but repetitive objectives, clunky controls, and underwhelming presentation leave it stuck in the mud.

For younger audiences or fans of Hot Wheels toys, Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem offers a few hours of lighthearted entertainment. However, anyone looking for a deeper, more polished Monster Truck experience might want to steer toward alternatives like Monster Jam. With a bit more variety and refinement, Hot Wheels Monster Trucks: Stunt Mayhem could have been a roaring success instead of a sputtering ride.
