In this explanatory review, we’re covering Cat Quest III by developer The Gentlebros:
Cat Quest III: (The Explanation)
Cat Quest III is the newest installment in the Cat Quest series. The series made its humble start back in 2017 and was developed by Gentlebros. The sequel was released in 2019 and both were received favourably by critic and the general public alike. After a five year long hiatus, a new entry in the Cat Quest series has arived. Leaving behind the medieval theme of knights and kingdoms that were the main focus of the previous entries, Cat Quest III takes to the seas in a swashbuckling adventure against the wicked Pi-rats of the Purribean with plenty of booty to be plundered and catventures to be had.
Cat Quest III follows a young yellow cat turned purrivateer who seeks the North Star Treasure with their disembodied Pirate Captain as it can grant the desires of those who seek it. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones searching for the North Star Treasure as the terrible Pi-rat King and his motley crew is also prowling the seas for this coveted treasure. What’s more, other Pirate crews have pledged allegiance to the Pi-rat King and will stop at nothing to maintain control of the Purribean, making traversal very dangerous indeed.
Still, a cat-throat purrivateer is no stranger to danger. Armed with a cutlass for close up melee damage and a flintlock pistol for attacking at range, you must fight your way through those dispicable enough to pick a fight with you in this 2.5D RPG, open world adventure. In the beginning area, enemies are quite weak and you can easily defeat them with your weapons. However, as you progress further into the game, you will have to upgrade your weapons to make them stronger, or better yet, find stronger weapons. Weapons can be dropped by enemies or found in chests. You can also find headwear and clothing in chests that can help boost stats like increasing your health, armor, magic, or even boost your magic attacks.
On the subject of magic attacks, you can also find and use magic spells that can have a number of elemental effects like lightning which shocks enemies. Ice which freezes foes, and Fire, which can burn them. Much like your weapons, you can upgrade your magic attacks to make them stronger. To do so, you will need to collect gems and trade them in to the dog mage who can be found at Pawt Purvanna. As for upgrading weapons and armor, there is a catsmith at Pawt Purvanna as well who can improve your gear at the cost of gold.
Gold is the primary means of currency in the Purribean and can be acquired by defeating enemies, collecting bounties and found in chests. Chests are found all over the place in the Purribean, on islands, in caves, or inside pirate strongholds. If you ever find yourself strapped for gold, a little bit of treasure hunting can help line your pockets. Of course, if you are looking for a better rewards, taking on bounties to defeat strong pirates will certainly do that for you but these foes have high prices on them for a reason so be sure to be properly prepared before crossing swords with them.
With Cat Quest III being an open world RPG, getting from Island to Island on a vast sea requires some kind of transport and with this being a game themed on pirates, what better way to navigate the Purribean Sea than with your very own pirate ship? Although the waters may be temperate, the tempers of enemy pirates will fly if you get close to them or open fire on them with your cannons. Combat can be a bit trickier when at sea as you must line up your cannons to be sure they hit their mark or you will be letting loose a barrage that will hit nothing but water. The ship, much like your character can also be upgraded to make the hull stronger, acquire special ammo with elemental effects, and even make reloading faster.
I had a lot of fun with Cat Quest III, so much so, that I am looking into picking up the previous games in the series as I have never played them before. I enjoyed the gameplay and the beautifully crafted world that I could spend hours just exploring every nook and cranny to find even more loot. My only critic was that I would have liked some more voice acting in the game. Sure, the game’s intro was narrated by the charming and talented Jon Cartwright, but I would have love to hear his voice throughout some of the moments during story progression where dialogue is exchanged between characters as opposed to text boxes and the occasional grunts and squeaks.
Still, even with that said, there is no point crying over spilt milk. To sum up, Cat Quest III is a purrfectly crafted catventure that is gauranteed to provide you with an ameowsing experience.
