YLands: Nintendo Switch Edition: (The Explanation)

Bohemia Interactive’s Ylands, a popular survival crafting game, is finally setting sail on the Nintendo Switch. Unlike its free-to-play model on Steam and mobile, the Switch version offers a buy-once, play-forever experience. You’ll have full access to both the creative and adventure modes, with optional DLCs for pets and blueprints that don’t gatekeep any essential content.

The visuals in YLands: Nintendo Switch Edition aren’t trying to mimic Minecraft’s blockiness or Terraria’s pixel art. Instead, it boasts low-poly graphics that, while simple, create a charming and enjoyable world to explore. The distinct style makes each Yland a unique adventure, perfect for those who love a good bit of island-hopping.

Adventure mode starts with you joining the Classy Adventurer’s Guild (C.A.G.) and being tasked with finding Mr. Elmwood. Naturally, things go awry, leaving you stranded on a deserted Yland with minimal resources. The game guides you through the basics of survival and crafting as you work to build a new ship and continue your quest.

You’ll explore several islands across six unique regions, each with different resources and wildlife. Initially, you’ll be confined to the tropical region, but as you gather exploration points, other regions will unlock. Be sure to check each region’s difficulty level before venturing out, as you’ll need appropriate gear to survive.

YLands: Nintendo Switch Edition features an extensive crafting system with a tech tree that lets you unlock skills in survival, combat, and manufacturing. You can create a wide range of items and build impressive bases, though this requires patience and resource management. I personally stuck to a basic camp setup to manage my inventory and crafting essentials.

Hunger and temperature mechanics add realism without being too punishing. You can also tame animals to help with exploration, making the journey across different Ylands quicker and more enjoyable.

While adventure mode is comprehensive, YLands: Nintendo Switch Edition also shines in its creative mode. Here, you have access to all tools, weapons, and materials without needing to unlock recipes or gather resources. This mode lets your imagination run wild, free from the constraints of survival.

Despite its many strengths, Ylands on the Switch has its flaws. Awkward camera angles can make crafting and placing objects tricky, often requiring you to dismantle and start over. Performance issues, such as lag during running, sailing, or combat, and occasional crashes, were particularly frustrating.

YLands: Nintendo Switch Edition offers a lot of content and replayability with its adventure and creative modes. The crafting mechanics and exploration scope are enjoyable, but the game’s performance on the Switch leaves much to be desired. A post-launch patch could hopefully address these issues, making for a smoother and more enjoyable experience.
