Link’s story is over.
First released on the Nintendo 3DS in Japan on October 8, 2016, and then coming to Australia, Europe and North America in September 2017, Monster Hunter Stories was an incredible RPG with gorgeous visuals and a compelling story. Capcom, in partnership with Marvelous, took a risk with the spin-off. Still, it paid off as Monster Hunter Stories would go on to be ported to mobile devices and eventually received a sequel in the form of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin for the Nintendo Switch.
Now, the original Monster Hunter Stories has been improved even further and is due to be release on the Nintendo Switch later this month, on June 14, 2024. However, while new content has been added, it is worth pointing out that not all of the original content from the 3DS version will make it over.
During an interview with Nintendo Life, producer Yoshihiro Akira was asked if the free Zelda DLC would be making a comeback, to which he answered this would not be the case.
Yoshihiro Akira: Collaboration contents from outside Capcom will not be carried over into this release.
When asked if any of the 3DS features Monster Hunter Stories utilized would be making a return, Akira answered with the following:
Yoshihiro Akira: Functions created specifically for the Nintendo 3DS have not been ported to other platforms.
It is a shame the Zelda content would not be coming back as it was one of the best DLCs ever created and one that was free to download. With it, by meeting certain in-game specifications, such as conquering the special The Legend of Zelda: Triforce Cup tournament (Gold-Level) players could obtain Epona’s Egg. Whereas if you succeeded in the special The Legend of Zelda: Battle for Hyrule tournament (Gold-Level), players would obtain the Hero’s Armor.
There was also a Majora’s Mask themed outfit called the “Cursed Mask,” which could be worn by Navirou and would alter Navirou’s voice to one befitting the Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. But, this wonderful content and more is lost to the ages. Will this fact alone make us not want to play the Nintendo Switch version of Monster Hunter Stories? No, we’re still going to play it, it just means we’ll have to settle for a less Zelda themed outing.
