Flicking through eight physical carts on Switch has never been easier.
The following article is a product review for the Switch 8-Game Card Reader (Remote Control Version) which was graciously provided to us by its manufacturer Alxum.
Hey folks, we are back with another product review for you. Previously on Miketendo64.com, we reviewed the Alxum Switch Game Card Reader and the Alxum Switch Dock & Card Reader that was capable of reading four Nintendo Switch carts at a simple push of a button. This time, Alxum has presented us with a new iteration. It is another Switch Game Card Reader, but this time, it can now read up to eight cards!
Much like the previous accessories by Alxum the Switch 8-Game Card Reader is fitted to the Nintendo Switch by slotting it on to the top of the dock and connecting it up to a USB power supply. You then slide the game card connector into the cartridge port of the Switch. Then at the press of the button on the top of the device, you will be able to cycle through your choice of games that you have slotted into the game card reader.
If you don’t want to be getting up every time to change games in the Switch 8-Game Card Reader manually, you can opt for the model that comes with a remote control that works at a range of about 3-5 metres. Now I say 3-5 metres as any devices in between you and the Game Card Reader can make it difficult for the device to pick up the signal if there are any obstacles in the way so should hiding your Switch dock behind a TV normally be your preference, you may have to put it in a more visible area if you plan to use the Switch 8-Game Card Reader with it.
Much like the previous versions of this device, the Switch 8-Game Card Reader does exactly what it says on the tin. It is a device that can read multiple Switch game cards. You simply slide a selection of your “Go To” games into each of the eight available reader slots and away you go. The LED switch on the top changes colour in indicate which slot is currently being read (Red is Game 1, Orange is Game 2, Pink is Game 3, etc.).
As the Alxum Switch 8-Game Card Reader needs constant electrical power in order to work, it does come with a USB-C port and a USB-C to USB-A cable so you can connect it up to the Switch dock or should you find yourself without a spare USB port, you can use one that may be on the side of your TV or alternatively, a modern USB-C AC outlet adapter.
Coming to the end of this review, I am glad that an eight slot version of this device is now available. One of my critiques for the original Alxum Switch Game Card Reader was that I wished it had the option to read eight cards rather than just four and storage space for four more. It is just far more practical this way and it means you are even less likely to be constantly swapping out cartridges during sessions.
Of course, it still lets itself down somewhat in the handheld department but then again, it is more than easy enough to swap out carts manually without having something strapped to the back of the Switch, making it heavier and more cumbersome. However, that is certainly food for thought and if it is feasible, and most importantly, practical, I’m sure the folks over at Alxum could make it a reality as well.
