Chasing Static

Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering the Chasing Static by developer Headware Games.

Chasing Static: (The Explanation)

In a gaming landscape dominated by adrenaline-pumping horror, Chasing Static takes a different route, offering a narrative-rich psychological thriller experience. Set amidst the eerie Welsh countryside, this game invites players into a slow-burn tale of mystery and tension.

Playing as Chris, still grappling with the loss of his father, you embark on a journey into the heart of Wales. What begins as a stop at a remote diner quickly escalates into a chilling ordeal as Chris finds himself ensnared in a perilous energy field. Haunted by ghosts and visions of the past, his only hope of survival lies in repairing scattered containment equipment while navigating the encroaching darkness.

Contrary to the loud jumpscares and relentless pursuits of many horror titles, Chasing Static opts for a subtler approach. There are no grotesque monsters lurking around every corner, nor are there gratuitous displays of violence. Instead, the game crafts its horror through meticulous exploration and an ever-present sense of unease. The desolate village of Hearth, once vibrant but now eerily deserted, serves as a haunting backdrop to Chris’s solitary struggle.

Gameplay revolves around methodical exploration of three key areas: the diner and surrounding forest, the ghostly village of Hearth, and a foreboding lakeside farmland. Armed with a Frequency Displacement Monitoring Device, players uncover echoes of the past, unraveling the mysteries that shroud each location. The optional echoes not only deepen the narrative but also offer valuable insights into solving puzzles.

Visually, Chasing Static captivates with its retro-inspired aesthetics. The low-poly textures evoke a nostalgic charm reminiscent of consoles past, while the haunting apparitions add a chilling contrast to the bleak landscape. Despite its simplicity, the attention to detail is commendable, ensuring a seamless and immersive experience.

While the dialogue and voice acting excel in conveying Chris’s genuine reactions and emotions, the game’s short length and somewhat underwhelming plot leave much to be desired. Just as the narrative gains momentum, it abruptly concludes, leaving unanswered questions lingering. However, the promise of multiple endings and the potential for future expansions or sequels offer hope for further exploration into this intriguing world.

In conclusion, Chasing Static delivers a captivating psychological thriller experience that, while brief, leaves a lasting impression. With its atmospheric visuals, immersive gameplay, and tantalizing hints of untold stories, it beckons players to delve deeper into its haunting mysteries. Though imperfect, it’s a journey worth embarking on for fans of narrative-driven horror.
