Wobbledogs

Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading.

In this explanatory review, we’re covering Wobbledogs by developer Animal Uprising:

Wobbledogs

Wobbledogs (The Explanation)

Wobbledogs recently hatched onto the Nintendo Switch, as well as other consoles and PC. The game itself is a bit difficult to explain as the premise is interesting to say the least. You manage an environment of dogs that emerge from cocoons that attach themselves to the ceiling of your habit. From there you need to feed them a variety of foods that affect how they grow and upgrade from young pup to dog until their death.

Along the way you need to play with your dogs that inhabit the world you are building. You can throw balls at them, give them squeaky toys and more. From time to time, you will need to clean up after your dog as well and dispose of their poop. Feeding your dog certain foods allows them to change and evolve during their cocooned stage into a variety of forms. You just need to make sure you apply the ‘science’ of which things to feed them to unlock all the varied versions they can become.

Playing through Wobbledogs you will unlock new items which you can use to decorate your space and customize the experience of raising these odd pets in their virtual dog cage. Each dog also needs to get exercise and happiness points, and sleep, so be sure to vary how you interact with each dog.

After spending some time with Wobbledogs and having named several pups, having them pass on was a bit emotional. The emotional attachement felt like having an attachment to a Nintendog puppy, Animal Crossing villager move out, or forgetting to feed a Tamagotchi. Seeing your dogs wobble around the room and interact with each other or objects in the room is kind of cool. The visual storytelling told through the aging process and how the environment affects your dogs is an interesting gameplay loop. I will say that this game is not for everyone but I could understand how many people will be entertained and drawn to this quirky pet simulator. Wobbledogs is available now for purchase on the Nintendo eShop.
