Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering Endling: Extinction Is Forever by developer Herobeat Studios.
Endling: Extinction Is Forever: (The Explanation)
Art. Music. Ambiance. Style. Gameplay. Mystery and Intrigue. The total package can be found within Endling: Extinction is Forever. I had been keeping track of Endling: Extinction is Forever for what seems like ages. Finally getting my paws on the game, where you play as a mother fox protecting her young cubs and at times in search of them, I am pleased to report that the game is amazing.
Presented in a 2D left-to-right movement style of platforming, Endling has you moving the mother fox along paths, up and down ledges into the foreground, across bridges and hiding in bushes. Early on the game introduces you to your cubs that you must keep alive by finding food in the evenings and bringing it back to them.
If you get squeamish at the sight of animals suffering injustices at the hands of hunters and poachers, the early game aspects of Endling: Extinction is Forever may not be for you. The opening hour of the game sees you navigating the woods during a fire, as a pregnant fox mother, and soon after the birth of your cubs, one of them is kidnapped. Then as you navigate the foxhole and gather food for your growing family, you can hear their yelps as they call out for their mother when they are in need.
As your cubs grow, they will begin to venture out of the foxhole with you and join you on your adventure. That of course puts your cubs in danger and as you navigate the world around you makes the ever-pressing danger of being spotted by hunters stressful. As you walk around the world in Endling: Extinction is Forever you may also come across remnants of the past through small visions of purple haze.
You control the mother fox with the Left control stick. You can bark, sneak, and run with B, R, and ZR respectively. Barking allows you to call your cubs to you and also lets you bare your teeth at enemies. Sneaking is important for navigating the world without causing a disturbance and running will help you move through the environment quicker. From time to time, you will come across bushes, trashcans, or other areas that you can interact with by pressing A. You can pick up food you find by pressing Y and taking them to your cubs or dropping the food items at their feet. The mother fox also has a Sense ability which lets her smell her cubs or the next waypoint in the game.
At the end of the day, Endling: Extinction Is Forever is a good game for sure. The atmosphere is intriguing and the fact that you play as a fox is unique. If you are looking for a game with style and mystery, as well as a bit of suspense, I highly recommend Endling: Extinction is Forever.
