After what felt like a lifetime of waiting, Mario Kart World is finally here and with this brand-new racing game comes a ton of new characters to fall in love with. But, while the day one Ver.1.1.0 update immediately unlocks more characters from the start, there are plenty more main characters and “NPC” characters to unlock and in this guide, we’ll be telling you how to unlock each one:

How to Get Every Character in Mario Kart World:

Editor’s Note: Due to not being able to play Mario Kart World prior to the release of the ver 1.1.0 update, the contents of this guide relate only to characters that can be unlocked from ver. 1.1.0 onwards:

To start with, there are seven main costumed characters that can be unlocked by playing through Mario Kart World’s Grand Prix. Of the seven cups first available to you, completing each cup will unlock a new character. It does not matter which cc you choose, as beating the cup on 50, 100, or 150cc will give you the character regardless. Also, you won’t have to worry about getting all three stars on each cup either. For a quick list of which character is available from each cup, we have that list here:

  • Donkey Kong | Complete the Mushroom Cup
  • Daisy | Complete the Flower Cup
  • Rosalina | Complete the Star Cup
  • Lakitu | Complete the Shell Cup
  • Birdo | Complete the Banana Cup
  • King Boo | Complete the Leaf Cup
  • Bowser Jr. | Complete the Lightning Cup

As for the other characters you can unlock,  the non-costumed “NPC” characters take a lot more effort. Dubbed “NPC,” because these racers are based on the NPCs you will encounter, watching you from the stands as you race. But to actually unlock them, whilst racing, be it during Grand Prix or Knockout Tour, you will need be in among top six placements and wait for an NPC to use the Kamek item, to have Kamek fly out and turn you into an NPC character that relates to the course you are racing on. These characters will take the longest time to unlock, but the full list is as follows:

  • Conkdor (New)
  • Chargin’ Chuck (New)
  • Cheep Cheep (New)
  • Fish Bone (New)
  • Dolphin (New)
