Nintendo Switch 2017

On this day, March 3rd, 2024, the Nintendo Switch is celebrating its seventh birthday. The hybrid console has been on a terrific run since it shot out of the gate and while sales are certainly slowing down, it is still continuing to sell steadily and is currently the third highest selling console of all time behind the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2.

Learning from the mistakes that were made with the Wii U, the Switch had quite the stellar line up of games in its launch year. Some notable titles include (but not limited to) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, ARMS, Super Mario Odyssey, Mario + Rabbids, Kingdom Battle, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Super Bomberman R, Pokken Tournament DX, Fire Emblem Warriors, 1-2 Switch, and Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King.

To me, that is quite an impressive lineup all by itself and what is wild, is that during the last seven years, the majority of those games have spawned some pretty great sequels with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Splatoon 3, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Super Bomberman R 2, Everybody 1.2 Switch, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, and Blossom Tales 2: The Minotaur Prince. That’s without mentioning all the other fantastic titles that have been released on the Switch over the last few years by Nintendo, indies and big third party developers like Ubisoft, Bethesda, Bandai Namco, and even Xbox as well with the likes of Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Pentiment, and Grounded.

We at Miketendo64 have been firm supporters of the Switch and jumped aboard the Switch train since its Day One launch. Fun fact, I actually bought the Switch for my brother Jack first so he could review The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild while I played the game on the Wii U. At the time, we told our father that Nintendo “sent” it to my brother so he wouldn’t go on a rant about what a waste of money it was. It is strange how the universe works though as, fast forward a few years, Nintendo UK actually did send us the Nintendo Switch OLED along with Metroid Dread to review, which in a way, turns a little white lie into a truth, even if it is several years after the fact.

As the Nintendo Switch goes into its eigth year. It will be interesting what the future holds for the console. While it is inevitable that the Switch successor is on its way, be it the Switch 2, the Super Nintendo Switch, or whatever Nintendo decides to call it, the current family of Switch systems is still going strong and I look forward to what is yet to come to the console. I have enjoyed the journey and the adventures that the Switch has taken me on. From Hyrule Field to New Donk City, Rainbow Road to Elysium, Inkopolis to the Splatlands and everywhere in between. There are still more adventures to take and I am all here for them.
