After too many years in the making, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is finally out and we positively love it. Mike has already gone ahead and done us the honour of penning our spoiler free review for it, but I still feel the need to discuss many factors of this amazing creation. Unlike Mike, however, everything I will go on to say will not be spoiler free so please take this as your first and only warning.

With that unpleasantry out of the way, it’s time for our eight and final topic, Yoshi and the lack thereof:

An Egg-cellent Teaser:

One big criticism I do have, however, is with regards to Yoshi. As a reliable ally of Mario’s, it’s a shame we didn’t get any real screen time dedicated to Yoshi. You see a whole bunch of them in one throwaway scene, but then as far as the actual movie goes, Yoshi is never seen again.

Thankfully though, there is a post-credits scene that does a close-up scene of a green spotted Yoshi egg. We don’t see the egg hatch and the scene feels a little like both the end credit scene to the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, when Tails is introduced, and the 1998 Godzilla film with Matthew Broderick, where it’s revealed one egg was missed.

Still, it’s welcome nonetheless and hopefully, should there be a second movie, Yoshi could be a big part of it. In the meantime, all of my previous criticisms aside, for what it is worth, I did very much so appreciate The Super Mario Bros. MovieIt was worth the wait and what Illumination have accomplished with Nintendo, is utterly magnificent.

After decades of bad video game adaptations, we’re finally getting some good ones and this one in particular is perfect for fans and family. It is something we can all share in, even if you’ve never heard of Mario before. I am sorely tempted to go back to the cinema for a second viewing, but I’d rather have it on DVD right now and watch it as many times as I can with the family before they get bored of it. I just hope the DVD comes with plenty of special features and behind-the-scenes content.

Naturally, all views above are entirely my own and I would love to hear what you guys thought of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Thank you for reading.
