Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading. In this installment, we’re covering Gas Pupperazzi by developer Sundae Month.
Pupperazzi: (The Explanation)
Pupperazzi is a first-person photography game that tasks the player with taking snaps of dogs. The game was developed by Sundae Month and published by Kitfox Games. It originally released on Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Windows and MacOS back in January 2022 and has now been ported to Nintendo Switch.
The general plot of the game is that you take on the role of a photojournalist who visits different locales to take photos of dogs. You will be tasked with taking photos of the dogs participating in a wide assortment of activities like chasing each other, sitting on boats, riding bicycles and mopeds, and so on. You will start off the game in a cove near a lighthouse and will need to fulfill requests and increase your followers by publishing photos to social media. When you reach these requirements, you will be able to venture to a different area and do it all again.
As you progress to each stage, the dogs you will be snapping pics of may be engaging in more elaborate activities. Taking photographs is pretty straightforward. You can aim the camera with ZL and take photos with ZR. You can also purchase upgrades to unlock things like filters and zoom. You can move around locations using the left joystick and move the camera angle with the right joystick.
You can interact with the dogs in the game as well. You can pick up objects like sticks or Frisbees. You can give them treats and most importantly, you CAN pet the dogs. It seems to be quite a big thing in video games these days so a game that is all about dogs just has to have this feature as well.
There isn’t very much else to Pupperazzi. It is a simple game with a simple premise and provides a relaxing experience for those who just want to take photographs of dogs. The art style is simplistic yet charming but the animation feels quite rigid. I would have liked a bit more fluidity to the dogs movements as they just seem to stiffly jop around rather than have independent movements in the legs and head. While it may not be New Pokémon Snap for dogs, it’s still charming enough if you are not too fussed with animation.
