Hey folks, welcome to the feature series we call “EXPlay.” A series of feature articles where we share our experience on games we’ve recently played in the form of written views and captured gameplay footage. To kick off the first instalment, today we’re all about Tanuki Justice by developer Wonderboy Bobi.
EXPlay Tanuki Justice: (Nintendo Switch)
Tanuki Justice is a retro 2D arcade platformer game where you play as an adorable but deadly Tanuki. Armed with shurikens, you must fight their way through enemies who can wipe you out with a single hit. Eliminate grunts whilst avoiding their attacks and make your way to the big boss that awaits you at the end of each stage.
The visual aesthetic for the game may look cutesy and colorful but don’t let that fool you. Tanuki Justice is Run & Gun and platforming action at its core. While you may only have shurikens to dish out the hurt, you can upgrade them by finding the appropriate power up. This will make them bigger and do more damage to enemies but be careful not to get hit as you will die and lose your power-up.
Tanuki Justice can seem harsh with its one-hit death mechanic but you can collect a shield power-up that will protect you from a singular hit. These power-ups can be few and far between so try not to rely on them too much. To make things things feel a bit fairer, when you lose all your lives, you can continue as many times as you like from the beginning of the stage you died in. You can also play through any stage that you have previously reached from the main menu. So while you can’t save your progress and continue for another time, you can replay from the last stage you have unlocked.
Tanuki Justice can be challenging but fun when playing alone. However, if the game feels to be a little too tough, you can even the odds against tough enemies by rounding up a friend or a family member to join you for 2-player co-op. How does the phrase go? “A problem shared is a problem halved?”
If Run & Gun arcade games are your kind of thing then you may get a kick out of Tanuki Justice. Whether playing alone or with a friend, this pixelated platforming gem is as chaotic as it is cute and will have you saying to yourself “Just one more go” over and over again,
