Headbangers: Rhythm Royale

Welcome to EXPlay, (Explain & Play) the review series where we care not for scores but tell it how it is when it comes to every game we get our hands on, whilst also taking the time to include some lengthy gameplay, to give you the reader, the chance to shape your own impressions and views whilst watching and reading.

In this explanatory review, we’re covering Headbangers: Rhythm Royale by developer Glee-Cheese Studio:

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale (The Explanation)

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale takes the age-old question of what’s happening inside a pigeon’s head and transforms it into a lively, rhythm-infused multiplayer extravaganza. With its quirky premise and engaging gameplay, this title offers a unique blend of competitive fun and musical challenges that is sure to leave players tapping their toes and cooing for more. From the onset, Headbangers: Rhythm Royale looks to pull a lot from the Fall Guys series even by shamelessly copying their overall UI and UX.

The heart of the game lies in its minigames—23 to be precise, spread across 4 rounds, each escalating in difficulty and musical intensity. From testing memory and rhythm to reflexes and reaction time, these challenges keep the energy high and the laughs rolling. The incorporation of rap ability adds an unexpected twist, making each round a delightful surprise. The controls are simple yet effective, ensuring that the musical party is accessible to players of all skill levels. While the game touts accessibility, I did find that some of the games relied heavily on button timing which could be impacted by online performance.

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale offers an impressive array of customization options for your pigeon, turning it into a canvas for creativity. The variety of outfits, hats, glasses, voices, and taunts is extensive, allowing players to craft their unique pigeon persona. The use of Crumbs as an in-game currency adds a satisfying progression element, encouraging players to strive for victory and personalize their pigeon with each playthrough. If you are keeping track, this is similar to how Fall Guys unlocks happen through either leveling up due to playing and doing well on a run and earning in-game money. It was unclear to me if the costumes in Headbangers: Rhythm Royale would alternate in the same way that costumes in Fall Guys do, but the game was listed as Season One. It may be safe to assume changes to the overall gameplay and unlockables as time progresses.

The game provides a well-rounded progression system, rewarding players with Crumbs and XP for completing challenges, utilizing in-game powerups, and excelling in bonus rounds. The battle pass adds an extra layer of motivation, ensuring that players always have their sights set on becoming the most stylish bird in the flock. The competitive edge is balanced with a touch of humor, making progression an enjoyable journey rather than a grind. Within most of the mini-games, you can also twirl your pigeon’s head around, which is comedic to see, but also begins to charge up the bonus round meter.

The inclusion of crossplay ensures that players can join the feathered frenzy with up to 30 pigeons, regardless of their platform of choice. This feature promotes inclusivity and makes it easy for friends to flock together, competing for the coveted title of Master Headbanger. The seamless multiplayer experience adds to the game’s overall charm and replayability. I believe CPU bots of various challenge levels also get added to your 30-pigeon opponent roster if not enough human-controlled pigeons join the match.

Headbangers: Rhythm Royale offers a refreshing take on multiplayer gaming, combining rhythm challenges with avian antics. The quirky concept, coupled with a diverse range of minigames and customization options, makes for an entertaining experience that will appeal to both casual and competitive gamers. Whether you’re a rhythm game enthusiast or just looking for a feathered fiesta with friends, Headbangers: Rhythm Royale delivers a delightful blend of musical mayhem and ‘rats with wings ’-style humorous moments. Finding online opponents should be a breeze. Here’s to hoping this game has legs and beats the early death of other royale games on the Nintendo Switch.
