The Shocking News of Yooka-Laylee no longer coming to Wii U has upset a lot of Nintendo fans that have been waiting for the successor to Banjo-Kazooie to grace their games consoles and has anger Kickstarter backers that have donated ideally for Yooka-Laylee to come to Wii U. Playtonic have apologise and have given the option for backers to change their ideal format or to recieve a complete refund.

Playtonic Games have stressed that it was due to “technical difficulties” of developing the game for Wii U and not due to the Ending of Wii U production. They also state that this did not affect their decision to bring Yooka- Laylee to the Switch.

It is understandable as to why they have moved focus to the Nintendo Switch but for the Legends that they are, Ex Rare Titans, who have managed to create extroadinary games on the limited capacity of the Nintendo 64 and when stonewalled, created something completely new to make it work, it does seem odd for them to drop the Wii U Development of the game due to technical difficulties when they are masters of highly technical feats. Especially when you look at other indie developers that have brought games to the Wii U like Fast Racing Neo, Slender, Steamworld Heist, just to name a few. Monolith Soft’s Xenoblade Chronicles X really pushed the Wii U to it’s limits and is still a graphically amazing game.

This is what Gavin Price, Studio Head at Playtonic Games had to say to GamesIndustry.biz

“No, that had nothing to do with the decision, As we have shared, it’s simply down to unforeseen technical difficulties. Its a testament to the team that we have continued to fully explore every possible option throughout making Yooka-Laylee.

“Our backers are why we are here today and that’s our first priority. We can assure you this was a hard decision for everyone. Our team has so much combined Nintendo heritage and we’re huge Nintendo fans as individuals. That’s why we’re working hard to make things right for our backers and with Nintendo and Playtonic’s fanbase over the coming weeks and months.”

“We’re working hard to provide Wii U fans with multiple options to let them decide how they’d like to move forwards,” says Price. “The Playtonic team members who backed were mostly Wii U backers too, so we know it’s not the news everyone wanted to hear but we’ll do our absolute best to make it the right decision and ensure Nintendo fans get the great experience they deserve.”

  1. I’m a little sad about the Wii U edition being nixxed, but it makes sense. I’m kinda worried about what’s going to happen with the Bloodstained Wii U version at this point.

  2. Interesting piece! I’m actually writing about this game’s release as well! Take a look at my post when it’s finished 🙂
