Just yesterday, Japanese newspaper Nikkei published a rumor that states the Wii U will be ceasing production by the end of the year to make way for the Nintendo’s upcoming console the NX. Nintendo is denying the report to be true. Nikkei reports Wii U production will stop due to “lack of popularity” compared to the Wii and that the console won’t be able to make a comeback. The paper also notes that game studios had difficulty developing games for the Wii U due to it’s particular nature.

According to Nikkei, the companies that make parts for the Wii U have started to cease production on some of the console’s components yet development on new Wii U titles will continue, and this seems to be a move to reduce the risk of excess Wii U inventory when the NX launches.

In contrast to article by Nikkei, Nintendo is denying they are discontinuing Wii U Production. A spokesperson from Nintendo has told Japanese site IT Media, “This isn’t an announcement from our company.” he then added, “From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production [of the Wii U] is scheduled to continue.”

Even though Nintendo is denying this report from Nikkei, it may still be worth noting that the paper does have a good track record when it comes to Nintendo rumors.
