I have always wondered why even with such great RPG games like Final Fantasy, Xenoblade Chronicles, Kingdom Hearts, World Of Warcraft etc, that Nintendo have not jumped on board the RPG train with an ‘All-Nintendo’ cast. They have dabbled with the likes of Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi Saga so why not take it that one step further. Just Imagine, you can play any Character from the Nintendo Universe from Mario or Link to Samus Aran and the Inklings. It could be a complete Mash-up of heroes from the many worlds of Nintendo that have to unite to fight a common enemy. I take inspiration of course from the ‘Subspace Emissary’ in Super Smash Bros Brawl. In that they all had to join together to defeat Tabuu and is subspace army. Of course that was primarily a ‘Beat em’ Up’ but what if Nintendo could take note of that and use it as a base to build a whole RPG from it. You could train up your fighters by earning experience, using items and power-ups. Each fighter has a different style, so for example Mario is a Brawler, Link is a swordsman and Samus Aran is a shooter. The use of Magic or ‘Skills’ which is popular in such games could come from the likes of Princess Zelda or Ness from Mother that use their powers to inflict damage on enemies.

You could create a party of four (for example) active fighters that you can select from the many different characters that you can find in the game to join your adventure. You can then customize to make them anyway you see fit into a formidable force. The game could include Multiplayer which will allow other players to take control of one of the characters. As for online play, there can be a Battle Colosseum where you (and a friend or friends) can play against others around the world to see who has the better team. I see plenty of potential in this game and as the Super Smash Bros series has such a huge fan base and character roster, I can’t see why a Super Smash RPG shouldn’t fare the same if not better and with the NX on the way, what better console to have it launched on.

  1. I’ve been on that bandwagon since the Wii. I hoped we could have a “Wii RPG”
Start the main story in Mushroom Kingdom or Hyrule as Mario or Link. Each respective princess was kidnapped seemingly by Bowser or Ganon. Travel to the neighboring kingdom and initially have a battle with Link or Mario. Defeat them, come to an understanding that you are on the same side and join forces. As you travel from world to world you gain new friends. Kirby, Donkey Kong, Luigi (go to Luigi’s Mansion) and others. Save your princesses and learn of the larger plot. Zelda tricks her way into your party as Sheik to be your main healer.
Why we haven’t gotten a game like this I’ll never know. Nintendo roster is big enough and you’d think with the proper story telling it would be a hit and maybe the birth of a new franchise.
